BEAT stands for Berea’s Economic Advancement Team, which is a group composed of what we like to call community activists,  which are community members who have backgrounds in everything from education to entrepreneurship and are interested in the economic development of Berea, Kentucky.

BEAT started in August of 2011 with a mission to revitalize, refocus, and restructure Berea’s economy. Steve Connelly, Mayor of Berea, Kentucky, had called upon the services of Michael Shuman, economist, attorney, entrepreneur, and author to use his expertise to perform a leakage and SWOT analysis for the City of Berea, Kentucky.

BEAT was charged with perpetuating a culture of economic development in Berea through maintaining education and conversation about the initiative via social media. Thus, BEAT was not only a tangible team of community members, but also an intangible presence on the web giving more individuals faster and better access to information about the economic development movement.
